Introduction
There are a number of standards that may be relevant in the development of FOSS emergency management software. We are attempting to gather links to them here.

Committees
- OASIS Emergency Management Technical Committee - The purpose of the TC is to design, develop, and release XML Schema-based standards that begin to solve these real-world problems. These standards will not only provide a framework for data exchange, but also for functionality and service accessibility, all with the common goal of seamless application and data interoperability.
- Emergency XML Consortium - See OASIS Emergency Management Technical Committee above.
- OpenGIS Consortium Critical Infrastructure Protection Initiative- The OGC Critical Infrastructure Protection Initiative (CIPI) is an OGC Interoperability Initiative designed to test the application of interoperable technology to meet Critical Infrastructure Detection, Prevention, Planning, Response, and Recovery challenges.

Standards
- Common Alerting Protocol - The Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) is an open, non-proprietary standard data interchange format that can be used to collect all types of hazard warnings and reports locally, regionally and nationally, for input into a wide range of information-management and warning dissemination systems.
- Emergency Data Exchange Language - This agreement establishes an alliance between DHS and the Consortium to promote the design, development, release and use of XML schema-based standards or other standards, tools, and processes that will help solve data sharing problems
- Forum Discussion on EDXL - held online 2005-06-08.
- Google Earth Keyhole Markup Language - KML, or Keyhole Markup Language, is an XML grammar and file format for modeling and storing geographic features such as points, lines, images and polygons for display in the Google Earth Client. A tutorial is available here.
